In the battle between two post-Soviet Republics Georgia and Moldova share the spoils in a much contested World Cup qualification clash.

In what would be a relative even match between two contestants in the lower half of the Georgia opened the scoring early in the first half, as Legia Warsaw midfielder received a pass on the left corner of the penalty box, and the midfielder opted to curl the ball leaving goalkeeper Ilie Cebanu without a chance to stop the ball. Both sides had several chances to increase the scoring, but it would be the Georgian, who would take the lead into halftime.

Both sides started lively in the second half with Moldova pressing slightly more in an attempt to equalize the scoring. Georgia would become somewhat complacent hoping to hit Moldova on the counter attack, but FC Rostov midfielder Gațcan had different plans, as he would stun Georgia with a marvellous strike from outside the box to level the scoring. The goal would set off a lively end to the second half with both sides pressing to score a winning goal. Both teams had chances to secure a late victory, but in the end would share the spoils.

Man of the Match

Moldova’s midfielder Gațcan was the player of the match, as he managed to organize Moldova’s midfield, and then turned into a real leader on the field helping his country secure an important point on the road in Tbilisi.

Georgia vs Moldova – Talking Point

The two tiny post-Soviet republics remain winless in the qualification stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Vladimír Weiss’ men in particular will be disappointed, however, as Georgia managed a famous win against Spain on June 7 2016, which sparked hope in the Caucasus Republic that Georgia could make a real push during this World Cup qualification campaign.
