A team synonymous with Swiss football, BSC Young Boys have been a competitive component of the Swiss Super League. Knocking Dynamo Kyiv out of the Champions League in the Third Qualifying Round, Young Boys know what they are facing in Kyiv. Beating Kyiv 2-0 at the Stade de Suisse in the second leg, the Swiss side progressed to the Play-Off Round on the away goal rule. Knocked out the Champions League by CSKA Moscow, Young Boys would soon find themselves meeting Dynamo Kyiv again. Drawn in Group B, the team reigning from the Ukrainian capital hosted Young Boys in a six-goal thriller that saw both sides get the point.

Currently sitting top of the Swiss Super League, BSC Young Boys have had a positive start to the season. Nine wins, two draws and two losses after 13 games, the team from Bern are starting to open a gap between themselves and Basel. Leading their attack with is Cameroonian forward, Jean-Pierre Nsamé. Making a move from Servette in 2017, Nsamé has not looked back. Sitting top of the goalscorer charts with eight goals, he will be a player to look out for against Dynamo Kyiv. Closely followed by Roger Assalé, Young Boys find themselves with a versatile African attack. Lining up in 4-4-2, Nsamé and Assalé will be leading the line for their side, hoping they can breakdown Dynamo Kyiv’s defence.

In their impressive performance against Sion, Young Boys were able to create space across the pitch. Passing accurately and breaking down their opponents, the task of creating opportunities came hand in hand. Young Boys’ ability to apply pressure and take the game to their opponent was on full display in their victory against Sion. Defensively, Young Boys were able to push Sion to the edge of their box, leaving their opponent to resort to long shots. Despite a relatively strong defensive performance, Young Boys were prone to errors, resulting in Sion going on the counterattack. Dynamo Kyiv will be looking out to pressure the Swiss side in

Despite a relatively strong defensive performance, Young Boys were prone to errors, resulting in Sion going on the counterattack. Dynamo Kyiv will be looking out to pressure the Swiss side in the hope they can force them into mistakes. Adi Hütter will be hoping errors that appeared in their clash against Sion will be ironed out when facing Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League.

Dynamo Kyiv’s performance have been far from positive recently. Racking up the draws, Alyaksandr Khatskevich found his side lacking creativity and goal-scoring ability. Their loss to Chornomorets Odesa epitomised that. With gap opening up between Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv in the league, Khatskevich is hoping he can revive his side in the Europa League. Sitting top of Group B, it has been a positive European outing for Kyiv. Two wins and one draw, Kyiv are probably lining themselves up for progressing further in the Europa League. They just need a win to guarantee advancement to the Round of 32; Dynamo Kyiv are going to be highly motivated when facing Young Boys.

As a result of injuries to players such as Viktor Tsygankov and Serhiy Sydorchuk, Khatskevich could revert to the 4-3-3 formation, unlike when at full strength where they primarily use 4-2-3-1. Dynamo Kyiv will have to make sure Dieumerci Mbokani receives the delivery needed up top. Being Kyiv’s main scorer this season, the Congolese forward will be looking to slot a few past Young Boys to propel his side to the Round of 32. An important component in Kyiv’s outcome in Switzerland will involve Denys Garmash. Playing midfield, the Ukrainian plays a vital in connecting Kyiv’s attacking ability. Providing assists in the league this season, Garmash can establish attacks. Dynamo Kyiv will certainly be relying on Garmash in midfield.

BSC Young Boys vs Dynamo Kyiv – Player to look for:

Jean-Pierre Nsamé #18 – BSC Young Boys

Currently the top scorer in the Swiss Super League, Jean-Pierre Nsamé has played an important role in Young Boys’ positive start to the season. Scoring eight goals in 13 games, the Cameroonian forward has been enjoying life in the Super League since joining Young Boys in 2017. Adding three assists to his name, Nsamé is going be a player to watch against Dynamo Kyiv. Contributing to Young Boys’ thrashing of Sion, Nsamé scored two goals to continue his sides strong start to the season. The Swiss sides thrashing of Sion provides evidence for their attack prowess, with Nsamé being an important component of that. Dynamo Kyiv are going to have to be strong in defence to deal with the Cameroonian forward.

Domagoj Vida #24 – FC Dynamo Kyiv

A stalwart in Dynamo Kyiv’s defence, Domagoj Vida will be central to the Ukrainian side’s defensive abilities. Suffering a gruesome head injury in Kyiv’s previous clash against Young Boys, Vida’s commitment to his team was on display. Known for his toughness and his ability as a player and leader, the Croatian defender has been an important component in Kyiv’s title-winning sides in 2014-15 and 2015-16. Linking up with Yevhen Khacheridi, another critical element for Kyiv’s defence has proved to be a success in domestic football. Sitting in 2nd with a goal difference of +16, Dynamo Kyiv have conceded ten goals, the 2nd lowest in the Ukrainian Premier League. In the Europa League, Kyiv a goal difference of +3, conceding five goals. The Ukrainian side can be a solid force at the back, and Domagoj Vida is going to be crucial in dealing with Young Boys’ attack.
