Braga vs Shakhtar Donetsk 2-4

Goals: 0-1 Kryvtsov (22’) 0-2 Taison (39’) 1-2 Stojiljković (41’) 1-3 Kryvtsov (61’) 1-4 Taison (65’) 2-4 Vukčević (88’)

Shakhtar started the match in a 4-4-2 formation with Dentinho, and super talent Andriy Boryachuk up front. But it was Ricardo Horta, who had the first chance of the game, after Shakhtar keeper Mykyta Shevchenko misplaced the ball. The young keeper, however, made up for his mishap by dipping the ball over the bar. Shakhtar, however, would strike first after Serhiy Kryvtsov unleashed a thunderous header after a corner to make it 1-0 for the Ukrainians. Braga then went on the attack with Shakhtar sitting deep looking to hit Braga on the counter-attack, and the Miners doubled the lead after Marlos found Taison on the counter, and the Brazilian national team player finished up a great move with a low drive from the edge of the box. Just before halftime Braga forward Nikola Stojiljković found a lifeline for Braga, as his close range header halved the score.

Coming out of the dressing room Braga went straight on the attack, with Shakhtar sitting deep once again trying to hit Braga on the counter. Paulo Fonseca would then attempt to stabilize Shakhtar’s midfield when he brought on Fred, who just moments after coming on would deliver a perfect free kick into Braga’s box where Kryvtsov would score his second of the game. Taison then would make it 4-1 with a wonderful solo-effort that displayed shades of Brazilian legend Romario. Nikola Vukčević got one back for Braga, but the goal made little difference, as Shakhtar walked away with a convincing victory.

Braga vs Shakhtar Donetsk – Man of the Match

Serhiy Kryvtsov and Taison were the players of the game. The Ukrainian defender Kryvtsov did well to be a danger man on Shakhtar’s set play situation scoring two thundering headers. Taison on the other hand was a constant threat to Braga’s defence, as Braga failed to handle the Brazilian’s speed.

Braga vs Shakhtar Donetsk – Talking Point

Rotation, rotation, rotation! Shakhtar’s convincing 4-1 victory showed off the depth of the side, as this was by no means Shakhtar’ regular starting eleven. Head coach Paulo Fonseca in fact has done well this season to regularly rotate his squad, and to integrate depth players, who only received little playing time under former head coach Mircea Lucescu. One example is Dentinho, who has blossomed this season under Fonseca, as the attacking forward is often used as a false-nine in a 4-4-2 formation.
